Sewer Utility Rate Increase

Sewer Utility Rate Increase

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 16, 2026

In 2024, La Center city staff were directed to move forward in conducting a rate study for its sewer utility rates and structure. The last sewer rate adjustment for La Center became effective on January 1, 2015, and was set at $66.00 per Equivalent Residential Unit (ERU). Sewer rates have been maintained at 2015 levels since then with significant changes in economic impacts, inflation, aging infrastructure and state mandated treatment plant expansion requirements. Operating expenses, insurance, salaries and material costs have increased over the past 11 years, in addition to aging infrastructure.

Based on information and evidence collected from the sewer utility rate study, resident survey feedback, and council recommendations, the La Center City Council moved forward to adopt Resolution 429 approving an increase in sewer rates based on volumetric flow. Effective July 1, 2026, the sewer rate will increase to $79.20. The updated rate will be reflected on August’s utility bill. Effective January 2027, an additional charge of $1.83 per 100 cubic feet of water usage using winter averaging will be added to the monthly rate for single family homes. The monthly sewer rate will increase on a stair-step approach through 2030 to meet appropriate levels to effectively serve infrastructure and community needs. The current rate for stormwater will remain at $10.60 per month.
